Sardis Synagogue
Salihli, Manisa
The largest Jewish place of worship known from the ancient world, with a mosaic floor, adjoining the gymnasium complex of Sardis.
Its story
A Jewish community is thought to have existed in Sardis from the 3rd century BC. In the Roman period, part of the gymnasium complex was given to the community and converted into a large synagogue. At the site, now regarded as the largest Jewish building known from antiquity, you can see mosaic floors, marble revetment and a re-erected table with eagle-relief supports.
