Sultan Mosque (Hafsa Sultan Complex)
Şehzadeler, Manisa
A 16th-century complex built in the name of Ayşe Hafsa Sultan, mother of Süleyman; the birthplace of the Mesir Macunu tradition.
Its story
The Sultan Mosque is the center of the complex founded in the early 16th century in the name of Ayşe Hafsa Sultan, wife of Selim I and mother of Süleyman the Magnificent. According to legend, Merkez Efendi cured the ailing Hafsa Sultan with a paste he prepared from dozens of spices; the distribution of this paste to the people gradually became the Mesir Macunu tradition. Today, too, on festival days the paste is scattered to the people from the mosque's dome and minarets.
