Alaaddin Bey Mosque
Merkez, Muş
A historic mosque commissioned in the early 18th century by Alaaddin Bey, administrator of Muş, known for its two-colored stone minaret and ornate portal.
Its story
The building, also called the Alaaddin Paşa Mosque, was commissioned in the early 18th century by Alaaddin Bey, the city's administrator (mütesellim), and is one of the three historic mosques in the center together with the Ulu Mosque and the Hacı Şeref Mosque. The square-plan main space is divided into nine sections; in the middle is a large dome, with smaller domes at the sides. Oil-lamp reliefs beside the portal in the narthex with three low domes, and colonnettes and plant motifs on the mihrab, are striking. The minaret, with a square base and cylindrical shaft, is built of two-colored cut stone. The Alaaddin Bey Hamam, commissioned by the same patron, is also nearby. The mosque reopened for worship in 2016 after a restoration of about two years in the mid-2010s.
