Muş Castle and Castle Viewpoint
Merkez, Muş
A viewpoint landscaped as a park by the municipality on the castle hill, one of the city's oldest settlement points, overlooking the Muş Plain.
Its story
It is not known who built Muş Castle; the hill, one of the oldest places in the city, has been the scene of struggles in the region since the 7th century. Because of long wars and natural disasters most of the castle has collapsed, and very few traces have survived. To the west of the hill is an area where ruined cemeteries from the Arab, Seljuk and Ottoman periods are intermingled. The castle surroundings have been landscaped as a park by the municipality and have become one of the picnic and strolling spots popular with local people. From the viewpoint on high, you can see the old urban fabric, the historic mosques below and the Muş Plain in the distance; it is a good spot for sunset photography.
