Monastery of St. Nicholas
Ürgüp, Nevşehir
A four-part monastery, half carved into the rock, dedicated to St. Nicholas of Myra, in the Monastery Valley 1 km south of Mustafapaşa.
Its story
In the 19th century the Monastery of St. Nicholas was a place revered by both the Christian and Muslim people of Sinasos and a center of social life. It is dedicated to St. Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, who became the figure of Santa Claus in the West. The three-story building, partly masonry and largely carved into the rock, includes, besides the main church, churches dedicated to St. Barbara, St. Sabbas and St. Menas, cells for the sick, a fountain and burial areas. The courtyard is entered through a decorated double-arched gate on the northwest.
