Keşlik Monastery
Ürgüp, Nevşehir
One of Cappadocia's most complete rock monastery complexes, near Cemil village, with two churches, a chapel, a refectory and a wine press.
Its story
Keşlik Monastery is a rock monastery south of Ürgüp, about 2 km past the village of Cemil. The complex consists of the churches of the Archangel (Arkangelos) and St. Stephen (Hagios Stephanos), a chapel, a holy spring, a baptismal pool, monks' cells, a kitchen, a refectory and a wine press. The Archangel Church is known to have been built in the 9th century with a single nave, enlarged around the 1200s and repainted in 1217/18. The Iconoclast-period decoration in the Church of St. Stephen suggests that the monastery's history may go back to the early Byzantine period.
