Its story
The museum building is a three-story mansion with an inner hall, begun in 1920 and completed in 1921; its first owner was Mehmet Mataracı. When Mustafa Kemal Atatürk came to Rize during his tour of the country in 1924, he stayed in this house as Mataracı's guest. The Mataracı family later donated the mansion to the Provincial Special Administration; the building opened to visitors on 27 December 1985 under the name Rize Atatürk House Museum. The ground floor displays inscriptions and gravestones, the first floor local weaving tools, and the second floor items belonging to Atatürk and photographs from the War of Independence period. The mansion in the Müftü neighborhood also reflects early 20th-century Turkish residential architecture.
