Şeyh Muslihiddin Mosque
Kaynarca, Sakarya
A wooden mosque in Kaynarca built in 1486, in the reign of Bayezid II, using the çantı technique without a single nail.
Its story
The mosque was commissioned in 1486 by Kıssahan Hacı Muslihuddin Mustafa bin Cüneyt on land donated by Sultan Bayezid II and was attached to this land by an endowment deed. Named after its founder, the building was constructed in the çantı technique with interlocking wooden beams and wooden wedges, without using a single metal nail. The endowment was long managed by trustees descended from Muslihiddin, and the mosque was repaired in the early 19th century by the trustee Kaymaslı Mehmed Ağa. Having survived the 1943, 1964 and 1999 earthquakes, the building closed for worship in 1996 because of neglect, and its minaret collapsed in the 1999 earthquake. Restored in 2010, the mosque is open today for Friday prayers and on special days; there is a historic graveyard in its courtyard.
