Its story
The structure, formerly known as Karaceyş Castle, rises on a hill commanding the Pamukova and Geyve plains. As it has no inscription, its construction date is not known for certain; the stones used, column bases and architectural style point to the Byzantine period, and local researchers suggest the 5th-6th century. Academic studies associate the castle with the area known in the Byzantine period as Metabole (Malagina). Because of the steep cliffs to its east, only a wall was built on that side, while a wall about 100 meters long was built for defense. The castle was added to Ottoman lands in 1314, in the time of Osman Gazi. Badly damaged by treasure-hunting digs, only a small part of the structure is still standing today.
