Rüstem Paşa Mosque (Sapanca)
Sapanca, Sakarya
The mosque surviving from the staging complex on the Istanbul–Baghdad road of Rüstem Paşa, grand vizier under Süleyman the Magnificent.
Its story
In the Ottoman period, Sapanca was an important stopover on the main road from Istanbul to Anatolia. In the 16th century, Rüstem Paşa, grand vizier of Süleyman the Magnificent, founded a staging complex here consisting of a mosque, a han and a hammam. The complex is believed to be counted among the works of Mimar Sinan. Today the mosque serves in the town center and is open for worship; few traces remain of the complex's other buildings. It can be added as a short history stop to a stroll along the shore of Sapanca Gölü.
