Its story
The museum is in a single-story building constructed in the last quarter of the 19th century as a primary school and used by various public institutions in later years. The building was repaired by the Samsun Provincial Special Administration in 2010 and opened to visitors in 2012 as a museum on the theme of the population exchange; it is counted among the first museums in Türkiye devoted to this subject. On display are clothes such as wedding dresses, bindallı gowns and cepken jackets, embroidered scarves, chests, kitchenware and tools of trade brought by the Muslim Turks moved from Greece to Anatolia under the protocol annexed to the Treaty of Lausanne. The showcases also hold photographs from the years of migration, travel documents issued to the exchangees, and some documents from the War of Independence period. Considering that more than 44,000 migrants were brought to Samsun between 1923 and 1924 and that some of them were settled in Alaçam, the museum is a good starting point for understanding the district's recent history.
