Its story
The original construction date of the Siirt Ulu Mosque is unknown; the building, which soon fell into ruin, was repaired and enlarged in 1129 by Mugīsüddin Mahmud, ruler of the Iraqi Seljuks, and in 1260 by the atabeg Mücahid İshak, and with the madrasa added beside it became a külliye. The courtyard of the mosque, which today lies about 3.5 meters below the surrounding ground, is reached from the north by a wide staircase. The three domes in front of the mihrab and the secondary mihrabs on either side of the iwan, decorated with star patterns in turquoise and navy-blue tiles, remain from the original building. The brick minaret, standing apart from the mosque on a square base, is notable for its geometric decoration formed with glazed bricks; as it leaned over time it was dismantled and rebuilt in 1974-1975. The mosque's walnut minbar in kündekâri (interlocking woodwork), dated 1214-15, is displayed at the Ankara Ethnography Museum.
