Sivas Archaeology Museum
Merkez, Sivas
A collection ranging from fossils to Hittite, Roman, Seljuk and Ottoman works, in a building built in 1914 as an industrial school.
Its story
The museum building was built in 1914, in the time of Governor Ahmed Muammer Bey, as the workshop of the Mekteb-i Sanayi (industrial school), and entered service as a museum in 1983. As one of the large archaeology museums of Central Anatolia, it displays fossils of mammals that lived in the region about 9 million years ago. Finds from the Chalcolithic Age, the Early Bronze Age and the Hittite period are enriched by works from excavations in the province such as Kuşaklı (Sarissa). There are also works from the Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman periods and a section devoted to the National Struggle. It is ideal for gaining context before touring the province's archaeological sites.
