Çorlu Castle Remains
Çorlu, Tekirdağ
Sections of wall in central Çorlu surviving from the castle of Tzirallum, which guarded the Byzantine road to Constantinople.
Its story
Çorlu's old name is Tzirallum, and in the Middle Ages there was a castle town here protecting Constantinople from the west. The town was taken by Süleyman Paşa in 1357, passed briefly back to Byzantium, and came definitively under Ottoman rule in 1361; the walls were largely destroyed at this time. Today limited wall remains can be seen in the center. Together with the nearby Süleymaniye Mosque and the Wax Museum, it makes a short city tour.
