Its story
The castle, about 18 km west of Trabzon, is built on a rise overlooking the sea. It is thought to have been built in the time of Emperor Alexios II of Trebizond (1297–1330) against Seljuk raids. The castle fell to the Ottoman army a few years after the conquest of Trabzon and was repaired in the Ottoman period. Although many parts of the castle, built of rubble and cut stone, have collapsed, it retains its overall appearance. In rescue excavations between 2007 and 2017, coins and ceramics from the Byzantine and Ottoman periods, Byzantine graves and the remains of a single-naved church were found. It is reached by a short detour from the coast road.
