Kanuni Sultan Süleyman Ottoman Culture House
Ortahisar, Trabzon
A historic house in Ortahisar, where Kanuni was born, displaying wax figures of Ottoman sultans and items on Trabzon's history.
Its story
This historic Turkish house within the city walls is in the neighborhood where Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent (Kanuni) was born. The building, dated to the 19th century, was restored by the Trabzon Governorship in 1994 and opened as a museum. The square-plan house has rooms opening onto a central hall on each floor and a spiral staircase; its roof is covered with traditional Turkish tiles. Inside, alongside wax figures of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror, Yavuz Sultan Selim and Kanuni Sultan Süleyman, paintings and books on Ottoman and Trabzon history are displayed. It can be visited together with the Literature Museum Library right next door and the Zağnos Valley.
