Trabzon Castle
Ortahisar, Trabzon
Historic city walls on the rock mass between the Tabakhane and Zağnos valleys, consisting of the Yukarı, Orta and Aşağı Hisar.
Its story
The Trabzon walls are built on the rock mass rising between two deep valleys that forms the city's oldest core. The walls are divided into sections: the Yukarı Hisar (upper citadel), Orta Hisar and Aşağı Hisar; their oldest parts are accepted as going back to antiquity. The Orta Hisar was expanded in the time of Emperor Alexios II of Trebizond (1297–1330). Evliya Çelebi mentions the castle's deep rock-cut moat and the buildings inside. Within and around the walls are the Ortahisar Fatih Mosque, the Zağnos and Tabakhane bridges, hamams and historic mansions. Walking from the Zağnos Valley Park, it is possible to see different sections and gates of the walls.
