Trabzon Museum (Kostaki Mansion)
Ortahisar, Trabzon
The provincial museum, displaying archaeological and ethnographic artifacts in an early 20th-century banker's mansion with hand-painted walls.
Its story
The museum building is the mansion commissioned as a residence by the banker Kostaki Teofilaktos between 1898 and 1913; it is known to have been designed by Italian architects, with many of its materials brought from Italy. The mansion later passed to the Nemlioğlu family, and Atatürk was hosted here on his first visit to Trabzon in 1924. Used as a government house, an inspectorate building and for many years as a girls' vocational high school, the building opened as a museum on 22 April 2001 after restoration between 1988 and 2001. Archaeological artifacts are displayed in the basement, the mansion's layout on the ground floor, and ethnographic items on the first floor; the walls of all floors except the basement are decorated with hand-painted ornament.
