Karaali Mosque
Merkez, Uşak
A mosque in Mendepazarı with shops beneath its qibla side, whose minaret survives from an older building.
Its story
Karaali Mosque is in Uşak's historic Mendepazarı quarter and is said to have been commissioned by someone named Kara Ali. Despite the inscription on it dated 1567-1568, the building's architectural features do not fit the 16th century; for this reason it is thought that the minaret survives from an older mosque and that the present building was shaped by a major repair in the first half of the 19th century. Beneath the qibla side of the transverse rectangular prayer hall are four shops. It is in the bazaar, a few minutes' walk from the Ulu Mosque and the Bedesten.
