Van Museum
İpekyolu, Van
A museum displaying one of the world's richest Urartian collections and the Hakkari stelae in its new building beside Van Castle.
Its story
The museum has its roots in a depot of artifacts established in 1932; it became a museum office in 1945 and a directorate in 1972. When the old building was damaged in the 2011 Van earthquakes, a new building was built northeast of Van Castle, and the museum reopened here on 27 August 2019. The halls display works from the Paleolithic period to the Ottoman period in chronological order; in the sections devoted to Urartu, bronze belts and plaques, weapons, jewelry and cuneiform stelae stand out. The stelae with human figures found in Hakkari, dated to the 2nd millennium BC, and the ethnography section of kilims from the Van–Hakkari region are also striking. Visiting the museum before the castle makes it easier to understand Tushpa.
