Amorium Ancient City
Emirdağ, Afyonkarahisar
A Phrygian city that flourished on Byzantium's military road and declined after the Arab sack of 838; excavations continue at Hisarköy.
Its story
Amorium (Amorion) is a Phrygian city founded in the Hellenistic period that flourished in the Byzantine era on the military road from Constantinople to Cilicia. The sack of the city by the Abbasid army in 838 is one of the important events of Byzantine history and began the city's decline. The remains lie beneath and around Hisarköy, about 13 km east of Emirdağ; ancient stones were reused when the village was founded in 1892. Ongoing excavations on the mound and in the lower city have uncovered remains of churches, a bath and city walls.
