Çiğiltepe Martyrs' Memorial
Sinanpaşa, Afyonkarahisar
Martyrs' memorial and monument to Colonel Reşat Bey, who took his own life when he could not take Çiğiltepe within the time he had promised during the Great Offensive.
Its story
The memorial at Çiğiltepe in the Sinanpaşa district was established in memory of Colonel Reşat Bey, who, during the Great Offensive, informed Commander-in-Chief Mustafa Kemal that he would take Çiğiltepe within the time he specified. When the hill could not be taken within that time, Colonel Reşat, out of a sense of duty, took his own life. Reşat Bey was the son of the Ottoman statesman Ziya Paşa and later came to be known by the name Çiğiltepe. The road to the memorial was paved by the Afyonkarahisar Governorship in 2004, the surroundings were planted with trees, and the monument was restored in 2005.
