Ipsus Battlefield
Merkez, Afyonkarahisar
The ancient Phrygian town where the decisive Battle of Ipsus between the successors of Alexander the Great took place in 301 BC.
Its story
Ipsus was a small town in ancient Phrygia, north of Synnada, and was of little importance in itself. Its fame comes from the great battle fought on its plain in 301 BC: the aged Antigonus and his son Demetrius fought the combined forces of Cassander, Lysimachus and Seleucus, and Antigonus lost his life. This battle determined the definitive division of Alexander's empire among his successors. In the Roman period the town took the name Julia; today few visible remains survive at the site.
