Synnada Ancient City
Şuhut, Afyonkarahisar
A Phrygia Salutaris city beneath today's Şuhut, famed for trading Dokimeion marble.
Its story
Synnada is one of the ancient cities of the Phrygia Salutaris region of Asia Minor and lies where the Şuhut district center is today. The purple-veined marble quarried at nearby Dokimeion was often called "Synnada marble" in the Roman world. The city became a metropolitan see in the Byzantine period. Since most of the remains lie beneath the modern settlement, inscribed stones and architectural fragments are mostly seen around the town and in museums.
