Eğri Minare (Leaning Minaret)
Merkez, Aksaray
A Seljuk-era minaret of red brick whose shaft has tilted over time, making it a symbol of Aksaray.
Its story
Believed to have been built between 1221 and 1237 during the reign of Alâeddin Keykubad I, the minaret is also called the Kızıl Minare (Red Minaret) because of its red brick. Its cylindrical shaft, set on a square base, is divided in two by a thin molding; the lower part is decorated with zigzag brickwork and the upper part with blue and green tile mosaics. The shaft has tilted noticeably over time and, because of the risk of collapse, was stabilized with steel cables in 1973. The adjacent mosque was built later.
