Çelebi Sultan Mehmed Madrasa and Merzifon Clock Tower
Merzifon, Amasya
The four-iwan madrasa built by Çelebi Mehmed in 1414–1417 and the brick clock tower at its entrance; the symbol of Merzifon.
Its story
The madrasa was commissioned by the Ottoman Sultan Çelebi Mehmed and built by the architect Şamlı Ebubekir between 1414 and 1417. The four-iwan building, with an open courtyard and twenty rooms, has a striking portal of red and white stone. Restored by the General Directorate of Foundations, the madrasa is used for cultural events. The cylindrical brick clock tower at its entrance was built in the 1860s by Ziya Paşa, governor of Amasya; sources give the dates 1865 and 1866. The nearby Çelebi Sultan Mehmet Mosque is also worth seeing for its wooden ceiling.
