Yalıboyu Houses
Merkez, Amasya
Ottoman houses with bay windows lined up on the old city wall on the north bank of the Yeşilırmak; Amasya's postcard view.
Its story
Most of these houses, stretching along the river in the Hatuniye neighborhood just below the King Rock Tombs, date from the 19th century. With their timber frames, mudbrick infill and whitewashed facades, and their bay windows and projections jutting out over the river, they are fine examples of traditional Ottoman domestic architecture. Many have a haremlik-selamlık layout, with courtyards and gardens. Listed by decision of the conservation board in 1992, some of the houses are now used as museums, cafés and guesthouses. The best view is from the opposite bank, especially with the evening lights and the rock tombs together.
