Hamamönü Historic Houses
Altındağ, Ankara
The living street fabric of old Ankara, with restored traditional Ankara houses, craft shops and tea gardens.
Its story
Hamamönü takes its name from the Karacabey Hammam, dated to the 15th century, and lies on the Hacettepe slopes south of Ankara Castle. Through a comprehensive street rehabilitation project carried out by Altındağ Municipality since the late 2000s, its two-story, timber-framed houses with bay windows have been faithfully renovated. Today the streets are home to traditional craft workshops, cafés and small museums. The Mehmet Akif Ersoy House Museum and the Taceddin Dergâhı are right next to the neighborhood. It turns into a lively urban square especially in the late afternoon and on Ramadan evenings.
