Church of St. Nicholas (Santa Claus)
Demre, Antalya
A Byzantine basilica housing the tomb of St. Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, who inspired the figure of Santa Claus; today a monument museum.
Its story
The church was built in the 6th century on the foundations of an older church where St. Nicholas served as bishop. It is believed that Nicholas lay here after his death and that his bones were later taken to Bari by Italian sailors. The building was repaired in 1862 by Russian Tsar Nicholas I and was used as a place of worship until the 1920s. Its wall frescoes and floor paving stand out.
