Its story
The first structure to greet those entering Artvin from the Çoruh valley is this castle, set on bedrock about 70 meters above the riverbed. Sources attribute its construction to the 10th century, to a Georgian ruler of the Bagratid dynasty (937). After the region came under Ottoman rule in the 16th century, it was repaired and enlarged and served as a guard post controlling the entrance to the city and the river road. The walls follow the edges of the rock; inside are a cistern and the remains of a rectangular structure thought to be a chapel. Restored in 2004, the castle was floodlit in 2012 and now forms a striking silhouette seen from the banks of the Çoruh in the evening.
