Artvin Atatürk Statue (Atatepe)
Merkez, Artvin
A 22-meter giant statue on Atatepe, south of the city, depicting Atatürk walking over rocks at Dumlupınar, with a viewing area.
Its story
The statue was commissioned by the Sıtkı Kahvecioğlu Foundation on a hill overlooking three valleys and unveiled on 19 May 2012. With a copper-clad steel body, the work is the product of about a year's work by the Georgian sculptor Jumber Jikia and a large team; it shows Atatürk advancing over rocks at Dumlupınar. A 60-meter flagpole rises beside it. The site was handed over to Artvin Municipality in 2016 and, after a viewing terrace and landscaping were added, opened to visitors under the name 'Atatepe'. From here, the city's houses climbing the slopes and the Çoruh valley can be seen in a wide panorama.
