Its story
According to a note in the Parhali Gospels, copied in 973, the Parhali Monastery was founded by the Georgian King David III between 961 and 973 and dedicated to John the Baptist. The church of the ensemble, which consists of the main church and two chapels, measures about 28x18 meters externally and is a three-aisled basilica whose high central nave stands clearly apart from the side aisles. The facades, clad in gray dressed stone, are enlivened by blind arches; the floral reliefs above the windows are well preserved. Repaired and converted into a mosque in 1677, the building is also known as the place where the oldest surviving copy of The Martyrdom of Shushanik, one of the oldest works of Georgian literature, was written. It lies on the road up to the Kaçkars, near Altıparmak Nature Park.
