Borçka Karagöl Nature Park
Borçka, Artvin
A nature park about 27 km from Borçka protecting two connected landslide lakes surrounded by dense spruce and beech forests.
Safety warning
Its story
Karagöl formed when landslide material that broke away from a slope at the headwaters of the Klaskuri Stream blocked the Savgule valley. Two lakes, one about 50 decares and the other much smaller, are linked by a channel. Although the lake is said to have formed in the 1800s, this is not certain. The lake, which silted up over time, was cleaned out in a joint effort by the DKMP and DSİ (State Hydraulic Works), and its shores were fitted with wooden boardwalks. The area was declared a nature park on 14 August 2002. With its rich forest cover and plant diversity, the lake is a popular excursion spot for locals and one of Artvin's favorite places for walking and picnics; the autumn leaf colors are especially worth seeing.
