Its story
The first version of the mosque was built around 1553 by Çerkez İskender Paşa, who took Ardanuç Castle in 1551. According to an inscription dated 1864–65 inside, the present building was rebuilt under Süleyman Paşa. That an 11th-century Georgian church previously stood on the site is evident from the reuse of its stones in the mosque: a stone with a Georgian inscription set upside down in one of the walls and a decorated 11th-century block can still be seen. The building, which also uses timber, was restored in 2017. Together with tombs, fountains and a historic hammam, the mosque forms the center of a small complex in Adakale and can easily be combined with a visit to Ardanuç Castle.
