Its story
The castle has no inscription and is dated to the 9th century because its plan and architectural features resemble those of Bagratid castles; it was also used in the Ottoman period. As the village of Satleli where it stands eventually became a neighborhood of Şavşat, it is also known as Şavşat Castle. Set on a rock rising beside the Artvin–Şavşat road about 2 km before the district center, it covers an area of about 3360 square meters. The east and west walls are in better condition; you can see towers reaching about 13 meters, the round tower in the southwest, the apse and north wall of a single-nave chapel, and a cistern carved into the bedrock. Excavations in 2015 uncovered a Georgian inscription on a wall.
