Safety warning
Its story
Karagöl formed from water collecting in a basin after a landslide mass that broke away from the slope blocked the valley. With a surface of about 5 hectares and a depth of up to 33 meters, the lake is the centerpiece of the Karagöl section of Karagöl–Sahara National Park. The dense spruce and pine forests surrounding it are reflected in its dark water, which gives the lake its name ('black lake'). The meadows northeast of the lake, nearby Çil Lake and the Meşeli Fairy Chimneys can be explored on short walks. It is considered one of the best places in the province for camping and caravanning; it can get crowded on summer weekends.
