Balıkesir Clock Tower
Altıeylül, Balıkesir
A five-story clock tower likened to the Galata Tower, built in 1827 and faithfully rebuilt in 1901.
Its story
Balıkesir Clock Tower rises on a slope in Belediye Parkı (Municipal Park). According to its inscription, it was commissioned in 1827 by Giritlizade Mehmet Paşa, governor of Silistra; its plan and bell were modeled on the clock tower in Silistra. The tower collapsed in the 1897 earthquake and was rebuilt in 1901 by the governor (mutasarrıf) Ömer Ali Bey, faithful to old photographs. With its cylindrical body about 20 meters high and its conical cap, it resembles the Galata Tower.
