Its story
Bartın houses reflect the civil architecture of the late Ottoman period; under the influence of the reforms after the 1839 Tanzimat Edict, traces of Art Nouveau and Baroque are seen in their plans, facades and decoration. The houses are usually two-story and set in gardens surrounded by wooden fences called 'daraba'; the ground floors are of stone and the upper floors of timber frame. The entrance section called 'gulluk' and the garden paths are paved with slate, and every garden has a stone well. The interiors consist of 'içer' rooms around a hall called 'dışar'; bedding cupboards, built-in bathing cubicles and hearths are the characteristic elements of the houses. Orta Mahalle and the surrounding streets are the part that best preserves this fabric.
