Its story
The Baksı Museum is in the village of Bayraktar (formerly Baksı), about 45 km from Bayburt, on a hill overlooking the Çoruh Valley. It was founded through an initiative launched in 2000 by Prof. Dr. Hüsamettin Koçan, an artist and academic from Bayburt, and opened to visitors in the summer of 2010. The museum takes its name from the village's former name, which means sage, healer or shaman in Old Turkic. The 40-decare site has exhibition halls, the Depot Museum, workshops, a conference hall, a library and a guesthouse. Contemporary artworks and the region's traditional weaving and handicrafts are displayed in the same space. The museum received the Council of Europe Museum Prize in 2014.
