Its story
Bayburt Castle, with walls more than 2 kilometers in circumference surrounding the hill rising above the city, is one of the largest castles in the region; its original construction date is unknown. It is reported to have been repaired in the Byzantine period in the time of Justinian and to have been one of the first places the Turks took in Anatolia. It underwent its most comprehensive repair at the beginning of the 13th century, in the time of the Seljuk prince Mugîsüddin Tuğrul Şah, when it was fortified against the Empire of Trebizond. The Ottomans took the castle in 1514, and a major repair was made in 1541 in the time of Suleiman the Magnificent. Evliya Çelebi, who visited in 1647, writes that there were houses and a mosque inside the castle. Damaged in the Ottoman–Russian War of 1828–1829, the castle has been undergoing excavation and restoration work since 2017. From the walls, the city and the Çoruh Valley are seen from a wide angle.
