Its story

Büyüktepe Höyük is about 5 km southwest of Demirözü, 1 km north of the village of Çiftetaş, in the Beşpınar valley. It consists of two natural hills joined by a neck; the large hill rises about 20 meters above the valley floor. From 1990, excavations were carried out under the direction of Antonio Sagona in a joint project of the University of Melbourne and the Erzurum Museum. Settlement layers stretching, though intermittently, from about 3000 BC to 1200 AD have been identified; handmade pottery of the Early Transcaucasian (Kura–Araxes) tradition, and Iron Age and Hellenistic finds have been recovered. Today the site looks like an open archaeological hill.
