Its story
The Bayburt Ulu Mosque is in the city center, close to the Çoruh River. It is accepted as having been built between the late 13th and early 14th century, in the time of the Anatolian Seljuk Sultan Gıyaseddin Mesud II (1282–1298). The building, largely ruined over time, was rebuilt in the 1970s in keeping with its original plan. According to Go Türkiye, elements of the old building such as the minaret with a glazed brick pattern and the muqarnas squinches have survived. Together with the Taşhan Bedesten and the bazaar right next to it, the mosque forms the city's historic center of trade and worship; it is still used as a Friday mosque today.
