Şerefiye Complex and Mosque
Merkez, Bitlis
A complex built in the 16th century by Şerefhan IV, bey of Bitlis, consisting of a mosque, madrasa, public kitchen and tomb, known for its ornate portal.
Its story
The complex was built in 1528–1529 by Şerefhan IV of the Şerefhanoğulları family, which ruled Bitlis for a long time. Consisting of a mosque, a madrasa, a public kitchen and the tomb of Şerefhan, the ensemble is right next to the historic bazaar at the foot of the castle. The portal of the cut-stone mosque in particular stands out for its detailed stone decoration; the tomb in the courtyard is one of the traces left on the city by the beylik family. Among the buildings Evliya Çelebi counted among the important mosques of Bitlis in the 17th century is a mosque named after Şeref Han. Today the mosque is open for worship; during the visit you can admire the workmanship of the portal and the position of the tomb, then walk a few minutes to the Ulu Mosque.
