Its story
Akşemseddin was a scholar who was the teacher of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror and is considered the spiritual leader of the conquest of Istanbul; he died in Göynük in 1459. His tomb was commissioned in 1464 by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror in the courtyard of the Gazi Süleyman Paşa Mosque. The dome of the hexagonal-plan tomb, built of küfeki stone, has no drum; the entrance is through the pointed-arched door to the east. The upper-row windows are decorated with plaster grilles with colored glass. Inside are the sarcophagi of Akşemseddin and his sons Sadullah and Emrullah Çelebi; the walnut sarcophagi decorated with pomegranate-flower motifs and carved inscriptions are among the finest examples of Ottoman woodwork. The tomb receives visitors all year round.
