Gazi Süleyman Paşa Mosque
Göynük, Bolu
Göynük's historic mosque, commissioned in the 14th century by Gazi Süleyman Paşa, son of Orhan Gazi, with the Tomb of Akşemseddin in its courtyard.
Its story
The mosque in the center of Göynük, opposite the Müderrisoğlu Mansion, was commissioned between 1331 and 1335 by Gazi Süleyman Paşa, son of Orhan Gazi, with a single minaret with a single balcony and a wooden dome. One of the earliest Ottoman buildings in the area, the mosque was repaired between 1948 and 1960; its present appearance also bears traces of later renovations. The Gazi Süleyman Paşa Hamam, built in the same years, and the tomb of Akşemseddin, teacher of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror, are right next to the mosque; these three buildings form the historic center of Göynük.
