Mudurnu Yıldırım Bayezid Mosque
Mudurnu, Bolu
A mosque commissioned by Yıldırım Bayezid as a prince, considered one of the early Ottoman experiments with large domes, with its single dome of about 19.5 meters.
Its story
The mosque, Mudurnu's largest historic building, was commissioned by Yıldırım Bayezid (Bayezid I) while he was a prince; sources give its construction date as 1374 or 1382. The hamam beside it is dated 1382 and forms a complex together with the madrasa. The nearly square main space is covered by a single dome 19.43 meters in diameter; with this size, the mosque is considered one of the first examples of large-domed mosques with eight supports in Ottoman architecture. The rubble-stone walls, the few windows and the tall dome drum give the building a heavy, fortress-like appearance. The mosque stands in the middle of Mudurnu's historic bazaar and the fabric of tradespeople where the Ahi tradition continues.
