Bolu Museum
Merkez, Bolu
The provincial museum displaying, in two halls, archaeological works recovered from Bolu and its surroundings and a collection of local ethnography.
Its story
Museum work in Bolu began in 1975; the museum opened to visitors on 14 November 1981 in the cultural center building on Stadyum Caddesi. The building, damaged in the 1999 Düzce earthquake, reopened in 2006 after repairs. The archaeology hall displays marble, glass, metal and terracotta works from the Neolithic Age to Byzantium in chronological order; the bust of Hermes found in the city, called Claudiopolis in the Roman period, and a head of Artemis bearing traces of painted hair are among the highlights. Statues of Asclepius and Hygieia from the Seben Çeltikdere excavations are also in the collection. The ethnography hall contains Mudurnu needle lace, a re-creation of a henna night, the kitchen and sitting room of an old Bolu house, jewelry and weapons. More than sixteen thousand works, including coins, are registered in the collection.
