Its story
Yeniçağa Lake is a tectonic lake formed under the influence of the North Anatolian Fault Line. The lake, at an altitude of 989 meters, has an area of about 2.6 km² and an average depth of 5 meters; its level varies from season to season depending on rainfall. Reduced in size in the 1950s to combat malaria and in the 1960s to prevent flooding, the lake recovered when the canal was closed in 1990. Its shores are reed beds and marsh; around it is one of Türkiye's deepest calcareous peatlands. About a hundred bird species have been identified on the lake; cranes and the eastern imperial eagle breed here, and honey buzzards and ospreys stop by during migration. The observation tower on the shore is suitable for birdwatching. Its proximity to the D-100 and the motorway makes access easy.
