An obelisk about 12 meters tall, belonging to a Roman funerary monument, on a hill north of İznik.
Its story
The monument known as Beştaş or Dikilitaş (the Obelisk) rises on a hill north of İznik, on the road to Elbeyli. According to its inscription, it was erected in the Roman period as a funerary monument for Gaius Cassius Philiscus. Made of stone blocks stacked on top of one another, the obelisk with its triangular cross-section is one of the most interesting Roman remains in the region. From its location a wide view opens over İznik Gölü and the town. It is also particularly good for photographs at sunset.
