İznik Roman Theater
İznik, Bursa
An ancient theater built in the Roman period on vaults raised over flat ground, brought to light by excavations.
Its story
The theater is associated with a large building project mentioned in the correspondence of Pliny, Roman governor of Bithynia. While most ancient theaters lean against a hillside, the İznik theater sits on vaulted substructures on flat ground. In the Byzantine period part of the building was used as a church and cemetery, and in the Ottoman period the area lay close to tile workshops. Long-running excavations have partly uncovered the seating rows and the stage building. Being close to the lakeshore, it can be combined with a walk by İznik Gölü.
